Formed when the ocean breached a volcanic crater, Hanauma Bay is a natural amphitheater of reef and turquoise water that has been a protected marine conservation area since 1967 — the first in Hawaii. Decades of management (daily visitor caps, mandatory conservation briefings, reef-safe rules) have kept it extraordinary: calm, shallow, and swarming with parrotfish, tangs, butterflyfish, and honu (green sea turtles), all a few fin-kicks from the beach.
That protection shapes the visit. The preserve closes two days a week (Mondays and Tuesdays) to let the reef rest, caps daily entries, and requires every visitor to watch a short orientation video. Non-residents must reserve timed entry online — slots are released two days in advance and are typically gone within minutes, so set an alarm and book instantly. There's an entry fee for non-residents plus parking; snorkel gear can be rented on site or brought. Mornings bring the calmest, clearest water and the fewest people.
Use only reef-safe sunscreen (it's the law in Hawaii), never touch or stand on coral, and keep distance from turtles. The beach itself — soft sand backed by the crater walls — is worth the visit even between swims. It's about 30 minutes east of Waikiki, and pairs beautifully with the scenic Kaiwi coast drive, the Halona Blowhole, and Sandy Beach just beyond.
What to Expect
Format
Timed-entry marine preserve: short conservation video, then beach and reef snorkeling at your own pace. Gear rental on site. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
Best Time
The earliest morning slots — calmest and clearest water, cooler sand, fewer people. Winter swells can stir visibility; summer is most reliably calm.
Duration
A half day: a couple of hours in the water plus beach time.
Tips
Reservations for non-residents open two days ahead online and sell out in minutes — book the second they open. Bring or rent snorkel gear and use reef-safe sunscreen only. Don't touch coral or turtles. Go early for the clearest water. The walk back up the hill is steeper than it looks — a tram runs if needed.

How do reservations work?
Non-residents must book timed entry online through the City & County of Honolulu system. Slots are released two days in advance and typically sell out within minutes — book immediately when they open. Hawaii residents don't need reservations.
When is it closed?
Every Monday and Tuesday, to give the reef rest days — plan around it.
Is it good for beginners?
The best on Oahu — the inner reef is calm, shallow, and packed with fish, ideal for first-timers and kids who can swim. Gear rents on site.
Will I see turtles?
Green sea turtles (honu) are regular visitors. Keep a respectful distance — touching or crowding them is illegal.
What sunscreen can I use?
Reef-safe (mineral) sunscreen only — Hawaii law bans sunscreens with oxybenzone and octinoxate. Rash guards are an even better option.
